Valuations Associate
As member of the Product Control team, the candidate will be focused on the valuation of the firm’s illiquid investments for reporting purposes and will collaborate with our co-sourcing partner and assist senior valuation associates in preparing valuation models and presentation materials for the valuation committee. This position offers the opportunity to work alongside investment professionals in a stimulating environment on various deals across different sectors (including private equity, real estate and distressed debt/loan portfolios) and involves the valuation of complex businesses, securities, and transaction structures. Based in New York, the candidate will work closely with colleagues in London and build partnerships with the investment and operations teams across our global offices.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Critically evaluate and monitor illiquid investments on a monthly basis.
Coordinate with the firm’s co-sourcing partner in the preparation, review and delivery of the valuation and documentation of a subset of illiquid positions.
Prepare and maintain valuation models and memorandums as well as corresponding documentation for all key valuation inputs.
Cultivate and maintain strong relationships with the Investment team, regularly engaging with them to stay informed on their deals.
Assist in the development and rollout of various technology projects to assist in maximizing the efficiency and independence of the valuation process.
Coordinate with third party valuation firms to provide support for independent review of certain manager-marked positions.
Assist with the year-end audit process by responding to queries and provide supporting documentation to auditors.
Reconcile challenges with the firm’s administrators during the monthly and quarterly NAV cycles.
Various other ad-hoc analytics and deliverables related to valuation, as needed.
The Person
We are looking for candidates who have:
A Bachelor/Master’s degree in Finance or STEM degree preferred but not essential.
1-3 years of relevant experience in valuation, corporate finance and/or financial due diligence/transaction advisory. Experience at an independent valuation firm or the valuation group of Big Four accounting firm is a plus.
Ability to build strong and constructive relationships with various teams whilst performing independent valuation.
Strong communication skills – ability to understand and articulate complex concepts concisely, both orally and in writing, in time pressured environments, to include facing off to the Investment team.
Strong modelling skills and understanding of valuation theory, methodologies and applications. Understanding of financial statements analysis with the ability to work through key assumptions, implicit caveats, and limitations.
Knowledge of multiple asset classes is preferred (private equity, loan pools, debt secured by hard assets such as real estate/ships/aircrafts).
Analytical and highly numerate, able to grasp data relationships and information logic.
Passion for making business processes more efficient and successful.
Ability to multi-task and manage shifting priorities in fast-paced environment.
Strong attention to detail and ability to work both independently and in a team environment.
Learns quickly and demonstrates proficiency; has strong propensity to learn and grow and actively works on development.
Familiarity with Capital IQ, Alteryx and Bloomberg an advantage.
Advanced Excel skills (VBA or basic programming a plus).
